Pamela Gibson's Statement
I am a weaver of tapestries and a painter: the media inform one another as I work. I am interested in the passage of time, and the changes that are inevitable in our lives and in nature. The changing seasons, life passages, and moments in time that are transcendent occupy my thoughts when I am designing. My process in both media is time intensive. In tapestry, this is by definition. Images are built slowly, architecturally, row by row. I use not only wool on linen weft, but often weave fabric, paper or soft objects into the tapestry, or attach objects to the finished piece. I think of these objects as carriers of secrets, wishes, and little prayers. I am utterly, unashamedly seduced by color and texture.
In tapestry I enjoy working on commission. I enjoy the limitations of a particular space and client, and believe tapestry is especially conducive to public venues. |
