Deborah Weir's Biography
I have been intrigued since childhood by the language of textiles: color, pattern, texture, and what these elements evoke. I designed costumes for university and professional theatres and for Shakespeare festivals throughout the West. I also had my own theatre company, Music in Motion, a sign language dance troupe, in the 1980s.
For most of my professional career I worked as a linguist. Since retiring in 2006, I have gotten a boost of artistic energy returning to my love of tapestry weaving. My current work involves color play and the themes of language, and passion. In addition to weaving, I dye, quilt, embroider, felt, print, bead, foil - creating or altering surfaces. With tapestry I build the texture into the inherent structure of the work itself.
