For those who have not worked on commission, the process may seem elusive, complicated and mysterious. How does an artist find commissions? What is involved in presenting work to a client or an art selection committee? Do commissions involve artistic compromise? What should a contract cover? Is working on commission gratifying?

Joan Baxter and Cecilia Blomberg have extensive experience carrying out commissions for private individuals, corporate clients and public art projects. In their illustrated essays, they share their thoughts, processes and insights into a variety of topics surrounding the commission process. Enjoy their unique approaches and perspectives and the remarkably creative work that has sprung out of working for specific audiences and specific spaces.
