Don Burn’s Artist Statement
How many of us have wondered what’s up the path, what’s over the ridge? The mystery, excitement, possibilities, and even uncertainty of the venture can move us onward. My Park Series currently consists of 6 small tapestries and 1 large tapestry (in process).
These tapestries have evolved from the simplification of a drawing into flattened shapes. I am driven by color and what this means to tapestry. How one color plays off another in wool – the excitement, the tension, the movement – this is the stimulus behind my work.
I find the dichotomy of the ancient medium of tapestry expressing contemporary subjects a powerful and satisfying tool. In my work, I use this dichotomy to make a statement that, I hope leads the viewer to question traditional conventions.
