Fiona R. Hutchison’s Statement

Sea, Sailing and Tapestry Weaving are the passions in my life and combine to inspire my creative process. It is my visual and emotional experiences of the sea that I strive to express in my work but it is in the manipulation of materials and the process of making where ideas come alive. I enjoy the process of building the tapestry on the loom. In recent works I have combined the traditional materials of cotton, linen and wool with paper and monofilament, altering their characteristic with paint and pva medium. Experimenting with the 3D qualities that can be achieved with tapestry and striving to create a light and delicate textile art that has the strength and presence of a traditional tapestry.
