Joyce Gifford’s Statement

My restless, creative mind is always seeking to realize original possibilities, to make connections and associations, to define alternatives and arrive at solutions, all in pursuit of my passion — Color.

I find inspiration in the weaving traditions of ethnic cultures, particularly the nomadic tribes, whose delight in color and joy in pattern encourage me in my own expression.  Recurring themes and motifs include the cycle of growth and order in the natural world and images depicting the connection between the manifesting world and its spiritual counterpart.

Joyce Gifford’s Biography

My training in tapestry weaving has been through continuing classes at the Damascus Fiber Arts School in Damascus, Oregon.  I have become proficient in the basic techniques of weft-faced tapestry using an upright loom and warp.  My studies include attendance at lectures and workshops, and exhibits of my work in local venues and the ATA Convergence events.

My approach to weaving is intuitive, my style geometric.  I seldom use pre-drawn plans but allow the work to evolve naturally as design solutions present themselves.  I have also demonstrated my love of fiber through original designs in hand-knit/embroidered clothing, beaded cross-stitch, needlepoint designs and crocheted basketry.
