Rebecca Smith’s Artist Statement
I use unconventional materials to create 3-dimensional structural work that lies outside the traditional boundaries of hand weaving. My weaving is loom-based, employing primarily tapestry techniques that I have adapted to working with wire, beads and yarn. The wire allows the work to be shaped and free-standing. The beads are transparent, allowing light to glow through. I blend the textures and the light into organic shapes that suggest features of the natural world.

Rebecca Smith’s Biography
My artistic journey has led me away from controlled, predetermined designs to spontaneous, free-form weaving. I came to my art via the serendipity of taking a weaving class and knowing immediately that it was what I wanted to spend my life doing. In the intervening years, I have pursued this calling in the capacity of teacher, exhibitor, and gallery owner. Today, I create simply for the sake of exploring my chosen art form to find ever-new possibilities of design, structure, and expression.
