Cameron Kashani’s Artist Statement

In designing and weaving my tapestries, I am influenced by nature and the historical architecture and designs of ancient civilizations and indigenous cultures. I have been working with fiber for two decades by employing various techniques and materials to create woven textiles that reflect my artistic vision inspired by geometric shapes and other architectural designs that have spun across centuries in Persian and Native American cultures. My designs encompass precision of lines and movements with pleasing illuminated colors that evoke the viewer’s imagination and curiosity. My intention is to communicate ancient architectural designs by transforming them into contemporary visual art. Currently, I am creating my tapestries using a variation of the Soumak weaving technique which originated in the Caucasus region.

Cameron Kashani’s Biography

I am an economist who became interested in fiber arts after purchasing a farm in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland. I raised sheep, goats, and alpacas while enhancing my skills in all aspects of animal husbandry, farming, and fiber arts. I attended a number of workshops locally, around the country, and abroad to enhance my knowledge of farming, weaving, felting, spinning, and dyeing wool. My interest in weaving has evolved over the years from weaving scarves, blankets, and rugs to tapestries. My goal is to create contemporary tapestries that inspire viewers while promoting spiritual and cultural connections between the East and West.
