Since 1996, ATA has sponsored a biennial, juried exhibition known as the American Tapestry Biennial. This juried exhibition highlights the best of international contemporary hand-woven tapestry. The work of hundreds of professional and amateur tapestry artists has been showcased by this exhibit since its inception. The exhibition receives submissions from artists around the world. The intention of this show is to include not only artists who work within more traditional definitions of tapestry but also those artists whose work expands upon the core principles of the medium as it explores new techniques and processes.

American Tapestry Biennial 14: Celebrating Contemporary Tapestry is on view from May 12, 2023-July 20, 2023 at the Appalachian Center for Crafts. The exhibition is open to the public and free to attend. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Gallery location is 1560 Craft Center Dr., Smithville, TN 37166.

Rena Wood, currently an Assistant Professor of Fiber Art at Tennessee Tech University’s Appalachian Center for Craft, was the juror of the exhibition. Wood selected nationally and internationally recognized artists to participate in the exhibition that highlights the woven structure as both a two- and three-dimensional form of artistic expression. Artists were encouraged to submit work that expands upon the core principles of the medium as it explores new techniques and processes.

First-place Teitelbaum Award for technical proficiency in tapestry weaving was given to Lialia Kuchma for her work JASO.

Second-place Teitelbaum Award was given to Elizabeth Buckley for the work Veils of Time.

Congratulations to the awardees and all exhibiting artists.

A catalog of included artists accompanies the exhibition and is available for purchase.
