Janet Austin’s Statement
My tapestries grow out of my drawings and paintings. Chaos and her children, the Chaotic Fragments, evolved from one 27 year-old oil painting of my messy studio table.
After the usual copying and dismembering, I began to trace a small segment with black colored pencil: in a flash, the fallen cone of yarn morphed into a black hole in the universe. I had found the chaos I was seeking.
Janet Austin’s Biography
I got hooked on weaving in 1972, at Massachusetts College of Art. For 8 years I wove functional items for sale, focusing on color and texture.
Feeling trapped in the horizontal/vertical grid, I earned an MFA in Painting at the University of North Carolina at Greenboro; almost accidentally the weaving and painting came together in 1983.
