Rebecca Smith says of her work:
“I wove this little portrait as a tribute to my mother who passed away ten years ago. The image is based on a photograph of her when she was in her early twenties. I have woven only a few portraits in my 20 years of tapestry weaving. After a friend’s mother passed away in late 2017, I gifted her with a portrait of her mother. I then decided to gift myself with one of my mother. The timing coincided with preparing for the Designing Weavers exhibit for “Monochromatic M’s….& More”, where my tapestry was awarded the ATA Award for Excellence by juror Nicki Bair. I used Photoshop to reduce the photographic image to a manageable number of shades on a gray scale. The tapestry is woven in five shades of brown.”
