2018 Priyanka Yadav

Eye Witness, 26″ x 16″
“His eyes express the experience and truth of his life. The dark colours are used symbolically with death, the inevitable truth.”

Priyanka Yadav, a student at Kashi Hindu University Varanasi, India is the winner of the International Student Award 2018.

“The inspiration for my art is the middle class family. I have tried to show the ups and downs in life, the various aspects of my life and the experience and truth of life. The deep color in my work shows the last state of life. In my work a human being exhibits a moment of happiness, which reflects the embodiment of the illumination of creation.

I belong to a village in India. Because of my mother’s encouragement, I began the study of art in the Visual Arts department of Kashi Hindu University in Varanasi, India. I graduated and am now pursuing a Masters in Textile Design. During my textile education, I was introduced to tapestry. I was attracted to it and gave it priority. During my studies I was selected for the all India National Exhibition and received the all India Prafulla Foundation Silver Award. I was also awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture in India.”

Banaras Ki Gali, 15″ x 23″
“This work is a subjective portrayal of a typical Banaras street. Someone is shown going towards the light – in Sanskrit, “Tamso ma jotirgamya,” which means going from dark to light.”

Happiness, 36″ x 42″
“This tapestry expresses an essential element of life – happiness. The hands and gestures and the cheerful colours create the feeling of joy.”

Bandis, 34″ x 42″
“This tapestry is based on my own experience of restriction. The suppression of my desires, thoughts, hobbies and mental conditions are portrayed in the work. The restriction is shown symbolically through the fence of a jail, which I feel inside.”
