Down South: Tapestry in Australia
The skills of tapestry weaving were initially brought to Australia by migrant weavers from Northern Europe and later by a range of international artists who came to Australia to run workshops. In addition, during the 1960’s and 1970’s, several Australian artists who are still working in the medium today went overseas to learn tapestry, many of whom subsequently taught in universities and art schools in Australia from the early 1980’s until recently. Read the accompanying essay Down South-Tapestry in Australia to learn more about the work included in the exhibition.
