Sinchi Ñahui (Quechua Voice): ETERNAL VISION

 

Eternal Vision, the title of a collection of my works, is a metaphor. It refers to various aspects and material substances which are of concern for human survival. The work approaches – as a thought, as a belief and as a vision – that which is common to us all, without limit of time or space.

This exhibition is part of a collection that deals with the element of water and its spectacular manifestations (streams, rivers, lakes, oceans), which are infinitely important, but also ordinary and natural and at the same time mysterious. My astonishment, respect and coexistence with water go beyond the respect my ancestors paid through offerings, rites, myths and legends. I am a witness to the exploration and exploitation that creates a dichotomy between its natural beauty, and its great importance for our ecological system, as a reserve that supports life as a whole.

These tapestries paint a variety of marine landscapes, through color and texture and an explosion of vitality and abundance.  At the same time, the colors and surroundings that humans paint with their presence in space. Each tapestry strives to express the life that water creates, which must be taken care of in order to preserve our future.

This piece depicts fish swimming in a bed of underwater flowers. Laura likens the sea creatures of the Galapagos to the beauty usually reserved for things such as flowers.

This piece is about the importance of water to humanity. Fish are like the fruit of the water and humans need to be grateful for this gift. The continuance of the circle of life is represented by the flowers coming from the fishes’ mouths.  The brown fish in the middle represents the water god. On top is the yellow energy from the sun and the bottom contains continuing and blooming life.

This textile features the Galapagos marine life with special attention to the great Manta Ray, which can be seen in blue in the top right corner. Laura envisioned an image offering happy gratitude for the life under the sea. He has brought his unique cultural vision to the scene with other creatures in a serene landscape.

This piece has a festive and happy tone. The bright colors and variations of intense and soft tones add to this celebratory textile’s beauty.

The weaving alone in this piece took more than 8 weeks of full time work. It exemplifies Laura’s great respect for human life. The blue represents vitality and continuity, as does the great number of directional lines. This marine landscape was inspired by a trip to the Galapagos Islands. With Laura’s innate reverence for humanity and nature, he was deeply affected by the life he saw there.

The inspiration for this textile came from the great Manta Ray which can be seen in blue in the top right corner.  This scene is an homage to the Galapagos Islands, where the evolution of life can be witnessed.  The imagery is a metaphor for the vitality and virility of life, a repeating theme in Laura’s work.

The inspiration for this tapestry was the experience of looking into the sunset on the Galapagos Islands and feeling that one’s life was so small in comparison to the enormous beauty and wonder of such a place. The human illusion that the sun actually “goes down” is false but the connection of humanity to nature at this particular time of day is real, as is the connection of the sea to the sky.

Sun, energy, and sea. Yellow runs throughout this tapestry, referring to both humans’ and sea creatures’ dependence both on the sun. Life would not be possible without it. The yellow lines that connect everything in the image reinforce this shared need. The sun is a god in Andean culture and its importance is found in almost all of Laura’s work.

Laura depicts strong energy and sunlight in this piece, as the fish celebrate the festivities of the summer. The creatures go different directions, as if mingling together. The fish with the flower in its mouth comes from Andean culture and represents the giving of life. The circle of life is also represented by the fish eggs positioned with importance throughout the tapestry.
