Herman Scholten, “Yellow Braid,” 1969

Herman Scholten, one of twenty-eight artists featured in special chapters of “Beyond Craft: The Art Fabric,” is considered an innovative and highly influential artist in modern Dutch textile art. Constantine and Larsen quote him saying, “My tapestries express themselves. They do not render anything else and do not represent anything. […] My tapestries are woven structures, forms, and colors put together and relate to one another in such a way that they render as closely as possible the emotional value that I wish to express.” He cautions against decorative or sensual uses of woven materials that can “become mere glamour.” (Beyond Craft: The Art Fabric, 248)
